Harmonikids Hohner-Sponsored Session With Troubled Youth At Cochise County Juvenile Detention Center

    12 July, 2022

On May 15, 2022 I provided a Hohner-sponsored Harmonikids session to youth on probation at the Cochise County Juvenile Justice Center in Sierra Vista, Arizona. Over the years Harmonikids’ ongoing programs to assist youth in detention facilities have become among my personal favorites because the teen participants (some of whom have been neglected, abandoned, and/or abused in their young lives) receive much-needed self esteem and confidence from the experience. Harmonikids provides a healthy and positive form of creative expression and emotional release for detained youth in this crucial time in their lives. Simply stated, the lessons often become an inspiration for these adolescents to grow, change, forgive the world – and themselves.  The harmonica often becomes a powerful but gentle tool to help kids get back on track. Long ago I learned to never underestimate the strength of music and the harmonica as a remarkable tool to reach out and make a positive difference in young lives. The benefits Harmonikids provided are shared bellow by Deputy Juvenile Probation Officer Cheryl Brown-Aguilar.

Thank you so much for sharing your talent with our youth in Cochise County. They enjoyed their time with you and learned so much from the experience. The youth in our community rarely have the opportunity to do something like this and you made it informative while enjoyable for all who were present. I’ve had some of our other probation youth indicate they wished they had come after they learned how much fun it was, and they would have received a harmonica.

Here is some feedback from our youth:

    “I had fun!” – NM

“I can’t believe I met and learned someone from Hollywood!” – EJ

“I didn’t realize we were all getting a new harmonica.” – JR

Thank you again for sharing your talent with our youth.
